Those list prices are about what I expected. I expect the actual retail prices to be much more reasonable. Hurry up, 9/09!
With list price's like these it looks like Michael Jackson will be out of debt long before the US economy.
We are just under two months away now. The buzz is going to get bigger.
$300 for the 12-disc mono box set? That's $25 per CD. The stereo box is an extra $50 over the individual albums for a DVD of stuff you get anyways and maybe some additional liner notes? And there's no bonus tracks on any disc? Sorry, Sir Paul, but there's a recession on. These prices are a %#$@& joke.
I've religiously bought every official release on CD often waiting in line at midnight so I could rush home and listen with headphones on, but even with an Amazon discount these prices are so high that they're insulting. I'll probably pick up the stereo albums individually, illegally download the monos, and keep wondering how Apple could be so out of touch that they'd release box sets during a global economic crisis priced out of the range for ordinary purchasers.
Where is Yellow Submarine in Mono?
All that money and it's missing a disk?
Those are the list prices, not retail prices....
I can see $199 for stereo, $249 for mono.
According to Amazon's listing, the mono box set is limited to 10,000 numbered copies. I have to have the mono box. I may be selective about the stereo discs. I'll buy one (probably "With the Beatles") to see if there has indeed been an improvement...any bass because there surely isn't much on the original.
Mono YS, Abbey Road and LIB? Why are these left out???
Thank god this stuff will be available for free on the internet.
I'd have been happy to pay $200 for a box with mono & stereo versions together on one disc (like the "Pet Sounds" reissue or countless others), but this is just a joke. I'm only marginally offended by the price (I didn't expect any kind of 'value' from EMI/Apple) but am really disappointed in the lack of common sense being exhibited here...talk about taking the fans for granted.
I don't want to overreact on the list prices for the boxes. Actual price will be much more reasonable (although not cheap). My own guess is that buying the stereo box vs the individual cd's will be about a wash. And while I may not like it, I can understand the mono box being more expensive since it is really a niche item for the hardcore contingent that can't really be marketed to casual fans -- plus it has the cool reproduction packaging that makes it distinct from the mass-produced stereo cd's.
Kind of interesting to me that the historical essays aren't by Mark Lewisohn...
Amazon.com has the mono box listed as limited to 10,000. Not sure if that's a worldwide number or a U.S. number. Either way, my order is in.
I must have this.
Yes the Mono box only was printed in Japan (the Stereo in the US). The Mono will be like Japan's wonderful mini LP replicas with all the details and extras. 299 is high but remember it is a limited edition and probably NOT for the masses. I am surprised that Amazon US has not discounted them yet and BeatleFest or Fest for Beatles has by 30 bucks. However I get free shipping from Amazon and if they lower the price before it ships, I get that new price.
Not only Yellow Sub not in the Mono Box, either is Abbey Road and Let it Be.
C'mon, guys, study up. Abbey Road and Let It Be were NEVER officially mixed or available in mono; that's why they're not there. As far as Yellow Submarine, its mono mix is simply a fold-down of the stereo; that's why it's not included.
What I want to know is what tracks are on the Mono Masters collection.
It would be safe to say that Mark Lewisohn is currently on the outs with Apple (or diplomatically otherwise engaged) since he's working on his multi-volume Beatles biography which would obviously use research he did while on Apple/EMI's dime.
They are discounted at the Fest for Beatle Fans and you get a free T shirt too.
At some point, they should release an actual photo of the stereo box instead of that misleading render. There's no way the box in this photo is 12"x6"x3"
Amazon NOW has them both 20% off which with along with no tax and free shipping make the sets well worth it in my opinion. And the 10,000 Mono sets are numbered.
I bought my last Beatles CD/Record when I bought Let It Be Naked- ( A waste of money IMO).
They have some nerve charging so much for music. I mean, $239 for a box set of music we already have is nuts.
If they release something NEW or Let It Be on DVD, that's different.
I'm done double and triple dipping for music that I own.
PS... maybe Macca can release every mono track as a BONUS TRACK ONLY on his multiple copies of CD singles.
I would expect a massive sale discount from retailers/online right around 9/9/09. I can't possibly imagine them staying at the prices they are now, especially the stereo. If the mono truly is that "limited," I guess that will be a collectors only type thing.
But I fully expect the stereo to go below $200 on amazon, and somewhere around a $175 9/9 price at places like Best Buy, Target, etc.
Sorry your comment misses the mark completely: "They have some nerve charging so much for music. I mean, $239 for a box set of music we already have is nuts.
If they release something NEW or Let It Be on DVD, that's different. "
Yes there was Let It Be (which was way differenet than the original, the ANthology Stes, Yello Sub and 1 but other than that, you were last "asked" to buy the Beatles albums on CD in 1987. And at that time CDs were fairly new, badly mastered and the packaging was minimal. This is the real deal and even though it's taken way too long, that probably helped make them as good as they are. This will be wonderful
Fest for Beatles fans usually discounts something only $5 and then charges whopping per item shipping...so tell me the t shirt is "free" with that kind of price. I'm sure Amazon is going to be much less than FFBF will charge.
HarryOatmeal,
Mark Lewisohn has said that he has chosen, to his credit, to do very little with Apple these days in order to preserve the integrity and objectivity of his upcoming biography set; please see one of Steve's other columns for the full story. He has done some minor work for Apple in the meantime, but to his credit and by his own choice (not Apple's) chose not to do any work for them at this time.
The original 1965 stereo mixes of Help and Rubber Soul, in the mono set.
How will they be different from the stereo 2009 mixes?
Got something to say?
