Beatles' history with the Grammys not the proudest in awards legacy

The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards are Sunday night. And every Grammy Awards ceremony brings recollections of how little respect the Beatles received, especially early in their career.

For example, in 1964, they won Best New Group (over Petula Clark, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Astrud Gilberto and Morgana King.) and Best Performance By A Vocal Group for "A Hard Day's Night." But here's what they didn't get:

  • They lost a nomination for "I Want to Hold Your Hand" for Record of the Year to Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto's "The Girl From Ipanema.")
  • Paul McCartney and John Lennon lost a Songwriter's Award for "A Hard Day's Night" to "Hello, Dolly!"
  • They lost Best Rock and Roll Recording for "A Hard Day's Night" to Petula Clark's "Downtown"
  • They lost Best Original Score Written For a Motion Picture or TV Show, again for "A Hard Day's Night" to "Mary Poppins".

There's a long string of these awards they lost out to questionable choices. The most extreme example was in 1966 when both "Eleanor Rigby" AND the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations" lost Best Contemporary Rock 'n' Roll Recording to ... "Winchester Cathedral" by the New Vaudeville Band.

You can find a complete history of the Beatles' Grammy Award wins and losses at my Abbeyrd Beatles Page site.

Well...as much as I love the Beatles and their music, not to mention AHDN, it's hard to fault an award given to Mary Poppins.
    The others, though...hard to figure.

In the 60s the Grammy's for the most part went to "established" long-time acts. The voters were, uh, different. Rock/pop was quite new and wasn't music to be taken seriously. It was all about Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Henry Mancini, et.al. But even so....there's no excuse for The Beatles not winning much more than they did. Musically, they were the 60s. They had 20 #1 singles and not one seemingly was deemed important/good enough to win Record of The Year?? I mean in '68 "Little Green Apples" and not "Hey Jude??" That pretty much says it all. They have at least five of the greatest albums of all time. And only one album of the Year? Please. There was some jealousy to be sure when it came to The Beatles. The voters came to love Simon and Garfunkel, however. They were Grammy darlings. The fact that The Beatles didn't win more often speaks volumes about the Grammy's, not The Beatles. How seriously can we take these "awards?" Not very.

But on the rock memorabilia site itsonlyrocknroll.com reported a few years ago that The Beatles won 20 prestigious Ivor Novello awards as singer song writers in just an 8 year recording career! John and Paul were awarded the first one as early as early 1964!

I do not agree. For example in Japan, who won the largest number of awards: Japanese artists and band.
In France, who won the largest number of awards: French artists and band.
And in Usa, it's Us artists and band.
Excuse me, but The Beatles weren't an American group.
But look in England: Between 1963 and 1970, The Beales have received 15 Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors. (an average of almost 2 Ivor Novello Awards per year)
But i don't understand this article: Concerning Usa, why you don't count all the awards won by The Beatles:
In Usa, The Beatles won 1 TRUSTEES AWARD (1972), 14 GRAMMY Hall Of Fame Award, 17 Grammy Awards, 1 Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, 1 National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Presidents' Award, 1 The Beatles' Academy Awards.

That's why the award should be called "The Granny's" and not the "Grammy's" They reward music only your granny could love - fine examples Winchester Cathedral & Hello Dolly.

(The Beatles are beyond awards: Mozart won zero award)
More important: In the Worldwide and during the twentieth century the most covered songs are the Beatles'songs
