Beatle news briefs: Paul McCartney says he and John Lennon are still a team in spirit

THE LENNON-McCARTNEY PARTNERSHIP IS STILL THERE: We've seen a lot of pickups of the Daily Record interview of Paul McCartney, all of them focusing on his quote that he thinks the Beatles might have reunited. Really, who knows what would have happened. For us, though, this is the important passage from that interview: "Now, if I write a song, I'm always cross-checking in my mind, 'Would John have let me write that line or is it just too soppy?' "Sometimes, I just think, 'Too bad, it's my song.' But I'm always cross-checking with him." So the Lennon-McCartney partnership is still there in spirit. What a beautiful sentiment.

WHO'S MORE FAMOUS, STELLA?: Stella McCartney was coaxed into playing a game of who's more famous with Piers Morgan. Who claimed he was winning, until it became Who's More Popular?

LIAM PLANS A BEATLES COMEDY: Liam Gallagher says his forthcoming film of Richard DiLello's "The Last Cocktail Party" will be funny and not the beginning of a big film making career, NME.com reports. He also said that the book had "biblical" significance for his former band Oasis. And you say you're not worried about this yet?

MORE ON HARRISON DOCUMENTARY: The Hollywood Reporter Sunday added a little more information to that provided by Variety on Saturday. "Living in the Material World" will be edited by David Tedeschi, who also edited the great "No Direction Home" documentary on Bob Dylan. And Scorsese confirmed the film will feature unreleased video and music from George Harrison. "Ultimately, we're trying to have the development of his own music tell the story, if we can. And the images that he shot, that [Olivia] shot, a lot of this is telling the story. There are some famous bits and some very interesting new material," Scorsese told the Reporter.

BUTLER RECALLS JOHN AND YOKO AS A FAMILY: In a story in the UK Telegraph, Indra Tamang, who worked as a butler for many years at the Dakota and inherited a fortune from a couple of his past employers, tells an anecdote about John Lennon and Yoko Ono in the Dakota. "I remember John and Yoko bringing their son Sean to a party in the courtyard and they looked so relaxed and natural. And then he was shot and we started to get the crowds and tour buses outside. It was never the same," he told the paper. He described Yoko Ono, who he still sees in the building, as "always charming."

PAUL IMPERSONATOR IN MORE TROUBLE: San Diego Headlines Examiner Jerrie Dean writes that Ted Felicetti, who plays Paul McCartney in a Beatle tribute band, is also wanted in Tennessee for non-payment of child support. He was previously arrested in April for failure to appear on a DWI charge.

BEATLES ARE THEIR "IDOLS": According to various reports, Crystal Bowersox will sing "Maybe I'm Amazed" this week on "American Idol." The song was chosen for her by Ellen DeGeneres. And Lee DeWyze, in a homecoming performance in Mount Prospect, Ill., played "Hey Jude" again, reports Chicago Nightlife Examiner Kristin Watson, with over 41,000 clapping hands simulataneously. You can see video of the homecoming at the link.

TO AGE WITH LOVE: And now for something completely different: This link, not so new, about singer Lulu ("To Sir With Love") and how she won't retire. She's a grandmother, too. Where does the time go?

Maybe I'm just on a gloom trip today, but titling the Harrison doc "Living In the Material World"? Yeah, real catchy title that. That'll bring in the uninitiated masses in this day and age. First we hear probably no theatrical run, then this title, which I think is the ultimate preaching-to-the-choir title.

I was so excited when I first heard of this project, I thought it would bring a renewed audience to George and his music. Now it sounds like a straight-to-dvd thing with a title that will chase away casual viewers.

And still no word on a release date? Next we'll read that they're going to avoid any obvious use of the word Beatle on the packaging and promo - if there is any promo. I suppose there'll necessarily be EMI involvement, which is more bad news.

PATTI M, SMITTY - any thoughts on this?

The bit about John, Yoko, and Sean at a birthday party in the Dakota is very heartwarming, but also bitersweet and sad because of what we've lost. Think I'll go fetal somewhere.

leo: Considering the Gallaghers' past history in regards to the Beatles, it's justified.

I am siding with Mr Marinucci concerning Liam G. Nothing about him gives me feelings of joy or comfort.

As for Lulu, one of her best performances was with Paul singing Brown Eyed Handsome Man. When there were rumors of them dating after his divorce I thought they would be a good match.

why would they make a documentary on george harrison? he was just the lead guitar player who made the two boring songs that you skip on every beatle album.

I wouldn't get too upset about the Harrison doc title. It could still be changed, since it won't come out for at least a year. If there is no publicity, it won't be for lack of trying I hope. I expect Scorsese would want to bang the drum and get some TV interviews and print articles. Olivia and Dhani also need to do something when this is released. I also worry about it not getting a theatrical release and going straight to DVD, as well as it being too heavy in Eastern religion. They have to know this needs to also connect with average folks. With a lot of unreleased and unseen goodies, this should make a commercial impact. As for the masses, if Beatle fans in general give it a chance, that is a pretty big market.
---Oh, and to that poster who doesn't understand why there is a Harrison documentary in the first place: Close-minded people like you really miss a lot in life. If Scorsese wants to do a project on George Harrison, ... well, it's self-explanatory.

leo - Last time Steve posted about this I made some very valid points that went unanswered (which is fine, there's not enough time to answer everybody). I guess some folks are just happy to be informed by the tabloids and make their judgements based on that. I could reiterate my points here, but there's no point if they're falling on deaf ears. The comment about "biblical" significance to Liam was taken way out of context, it still doesn't mean he's gonna try to write himself into the movie, as was implied in the last post regarding this. But if that's the angle Steve's coming from, then I'm happy to live and let live.

    ewgfawefawe - I really hope you're joking!

The record stores in my area said they can't get the "Paperback Writer" single. Was the release delayed?

there was a "sharpness" to lennon - a crispness that came from
having to put out songs quickly - in a time when the backbeat was
"crisp" with a faster tempo and an "upness" to it - and - lennon
(and paul) were art school - they knew of the greats - and the
sentiment of that - P.s i love all of them - john - ono - paul-
george (!!!!) they were all great - john had the fiery irishman
about him as well - george martin was the perfect arty poshness
    to them - what a team !!!!
