Beatle news briefs and history for Feb. 20: For the benefit of Mr. Kite

On Feb . 20. 1962, the Beatles played at Floral Hall, Promenade, Southport, Lancashire, on a bill with Gerry and the Pacemakers, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes and the Chris Hillman Jazzmen.

On Feb. 20, 1965, the Beatles recorded "That Means a Lot," a song not released in a Beatles version until the "Anthology 2" CD set. Not surprising really, since it's not one of Lennon-McCartney's finest moments. P.J. Proby, however, recorded a cover of it.

On Feb. 20, 1967, the calliope sound effects for "For the Benefit of Mr. Kite" were put together. Mark Lewisohn, in "The Complete Beatles Chronicle," says engineer Geoff Emerick cut up the tape, threw it up in the air, then reassembled it. San Francisco's legendary band the Residents can be seen in a live performance of the song here.

In 1969, "Candy," based on the sexy novel by Terry Southern and featuring a supporting role by Ringo Starr, premieres in London.

In 2008, Paul McCartney performed at the Brit Awards. We've included "Dance Tonight" from the show above.
