Entering the 2009 Big East football season Marshwan “Mardy” Gilyard is unquestionably the top wide receiver in the conference. But how does he stack up against the elite wide receivers in NCAA football? Is he the best receiver in college football?

Fantasy College Blitz drops the ball naming Gilyard the 11th best WR in the NCAA. College Fantasy Coach ranks Gilyard as the 8th best collegiate receiver entering the ’09 season, while College Football Geek gives Mardy a little more love ranking him 7th.

In terms of transitioning from NCAA football to the NFL, CBS Sports rates the 6’ 1”, 185 pound Gilyard as the second best WR prospect and the 19th overall player prospect. CBS also predicts Gilyard to get drafted in the first or second round of the 2010 NFL draft.

There is no doubt as to Tony Pike’s number one option in ’09, and this should only help Gilyard’s statistical achievements and NFL draft status. Mardy will be looking to improve upon his 2008 stats that included 81 receptions for 1276 yards and 11 touchdowns. Making matters worse for opponents, Gilyard added nearly 1000 yards to his ‘08 all-purpose total in the form of kick returns. He is definitely not a one dimensional player.

Mardy Gilyard’s physical stature is similar to a very accomplished NFL wide receiver Cincinnati fans are quite familiar with – Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson. Enhancing Gilyard’s already high draft potential are his speed, great hands and explosive ability. Entering the NFL, Chad Johnson ran a 4.54 at the 2001 combine. Gilyard’s 40 yard dash time, according to CBS Sports, is 4.51.

In addition, Gilyard’s ability to boost any NFL clubs special teams unit will raise his stock even further. The 2008 Big East Special Teams Player of the Year has to be the favorite to win the award again.

Look for Mardy Gilyard to get drafted late in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft. Depending on the antics of the afore mentioned Chad Ochocinco, maybe the Cincinnati Bengals will be looking to draft another wide receiver.

This video clip gives nice insight into Gilyard and the challenges he has overcome:

Thanks for the reference. Gilyard likely moves up the rankings with Hazelton out, but I think #11 WR out of 120 teams would be something to celebrate?

I agree. Regardless of his ranking among peers, Gilyard is a wonderful receiver. It will be nice to watch him for one more season.
