The Atlantic City Hilton, known for its top-notch casino, hotel, beach bar, and restaurants, presented the 42nd President of the United States, Bill Clinton, as its first speaker on Friday evening, July 23rd, in its series of summer political lectures. The series of lectures is being billed as a break from gambling, bars and beaches providing an opportunity to engage in an intellectual form of entertainment.
The speaker series was to have begun earlier this summer with Glen Beck and Bill O'Reilly of Fox News, but their appearance was postponed due to severe weather. Mr. Clinton began his lecture by joking about the speaker series having been presented to him as a series of intellectual lectures, but was confused when he had been told that Glen Beck was to be one of the speakers.
The 42nd President spoke in typical Bill Clinton fashion, down to earth, yet clearly intellectual with a touch of persuasion aimed at encouraging those in attendance to take action to better their world. Bill Clinton noted the seriousness of global warming, the economy and how important non-governmental organizations have been in recent years. He occasionally pointed out the areas of success of his Foundation's work and its role in improving individuals' lives in the United States as well as internationally. He also stated his belief that green energy was not only important to slow global warming, but is also vital to economic recovery as the industry to invest in comparing it to the importance of the I.T. industry in the 1990's.
One woman was so impressed with Mr. Clinton during the lecture, she shouted from the audience, "why don't you run again?". Mr. Clinton matter of factly replied, "because its unconstitutional."
The lecture concluded with a few questions from attendees passed on to the Hilton's CEO, Nicholas Ribis, taking the stage with Mr. Clinton. In response to a question concerning the distracting political bickering occurring in US politics today, Mr. Clinton advised the crowd that they should reinforce to their elected officials the importance of doing their jobs in working on the serious issues rather than taking part in the political bickering. Bill Clinton told the attendees to "get rid" of those politicians who would rather spend their time mudslinging than working on issues.
