Family Rock Climbing

Kids are natural monkeys. Give them room to climb; enjoy the laughter and giggles that ensue.

Kids on belay. Parents having fun. Activity for the whole family. There's no way to go wrong with that! Even if you have had little or no climbing experience, this activity will be a delight. A few minutes spent in a belay class and you'll be ready to belay for those little climbing kiddos. You may notice deep happiness and little fingers and feet popping up a vertical wall. That's predictable. Just enjoy it.

There are many climbing walls in San Francisco, including my favorite, Planet Granite. Located in "The Glass Palace" on Crissy Field, Planet Granite has everything you need for a great rock climbing adventure for the whole family.

The belay class at Planet Granite runs $35. Along with the class and equipment rental, you get a day pass to belay and climb.

You may be amazed at the inspirational ethos of kids. They are willing to give things a go, and if they are around people climbing up those walls they will usually scamper to the top before you can say, "Climb on!"

The beginner walls are quite easy, and no matter your fitness level you will find a wall you can scramble up. For the more experienced, there are always exciting walls to throw yourself on.

You may get hooked. You may leave the gym, glance at the flushed happy faces on your brood and decide that this is a worthwhile weekly tradition. Family time, happy time, time perched on precarious places... what could be better than that?

When you're through with your climb, don't forget to track it on Skimble. Rock climbing suit you? You loved Planet Granite? If you liked this adventure, you'll love taking the family on flying trapeze
