Award winner: The Twisted Collins by Syreeta Cook
Bombay Sapphire and GQ Magazine sent out a call to local bartenders to create an original drink using Bombay Sapphire, Syreeta Cook of Brooklyn Jazz Café created the Twisted Collins, beating out 23 other contestants and winning the award of Dallas’ Most Inspired Bartender. Not only that, Syreeta will also be featured in an upcoming issue of GQ and flies to Las Vegas later this month to compete nationally for Bartender of the Year.
The Twisted Collins, a variation on the Tom Collins, is a tangy, fragrant delight to the senses. The often-dominant taste of gin rides in the back seat here, letting the cocktail’s juicy and sweet characteristics take over. Muddled jalapenos provide a spicy afterburn, but an ample sprinkling of cinnamon on top keeps everything in balance.
For obvious reasons, Syreeta can’t publish the recipe until the competition is over, but she had this to share with us about the Twisted Collins:
I don’t want anyone knowing the recipe just yet, but I will tell you that I use fresh lemon juice, Bombay sapphire, Cointreau, ginger beer, jalapenos, and two secret ingredients. After a friend of mine urged me to enter the contest, I was trying to think of what I was going to do. One day in the restaurant someone was eating jalapenos, and I made the drink up on the spot. I was inspired by a cocktail I had when I went to Bermuda recently called a Swizzle, which also uses ginger beer. After I made my drink, I didn’t like it at first but people kept telling me how good it was. After tasting it a few times, I changed my mind.--Syreeta Cook
