Brooklyn's Jazz Cafe: great entertainment, and great food
Brooklyn Jazz Café near downtown Dallas is lively entertainment lounge that boasts the city’s hottest jazz bands, and excellent cuisine as well. “Coming to Brooklyn’s is like going to Northpark Mall,” says general manager Lorna Tate, “there’s something for everyone. Brooklyn’s has great entertainment, and our food is off the chain!”

Lorna and her husband Donovan originally opened Brooklyn’s in the Bishop Arts District in 2004. “My husband and I moved to Dallas from New York,” Lorna says, “and were disappointed that we couldn’t find a place to have dinner, listen to jazz, and have fellowship. So we decided to open one.” Brooklyn’s was well received. “Our opening night there was a line around the block by 6 pm, all people waiting for the music to start.” Two years later a decision was made to move the venue to its current, larger location near Southside on Lamar. “We stay busy. There’s something going on at Brooklyn’s every night.”
By ‘something’ Mrs. Tate means ‘jazz music’, and Brooklyn’s offers lots of it. In fact, Lorna prides herself personally on Brooklyn’s music offerings. “I’m an avid music lover, and I look for quality entertainment. I hold the bands to a pretty high standard. I don’t tell them what to play, I just tell them they need to come in and be entertaining.” Some bands on Brooklyn’s current line-up include the Freddie Jones Quartet, Natural Change, and songbirds such as Kenya, and Martha Burks.
While the bands cook it up on the stage, Brooklyn’s chefs stay busy in the kitchen serving up popular dishes such as pot roast, chicken fried steak, and seafood lasagna. Seafood lasagna? “People tell me lasagna is supposed to be made with beef, and I tell them ‘Well, ours isn’t. And it makes it even better.’ Our is made shrimp, Mahi-Mahi, and spinach and topped with a delicious cream sauce. It’s a very in-demand dish.” Reservations are recommended for dinner, but not required during lunch (11a-2p Mon-Sat) or Sunday brunch (from 11a-4p).
Lorna personally invites you to try out the Brooklyn experience. “Brooklyn’s is a fun place to be. We get all types of people in here: urban professionals, store clerks, even the mayor of Dallas comes in occasionally. It's like a melting pot."
