Raleigh has its share of sports bars, but only a few in the area surrounding N.C. State's campus. These bars offer a much livelier sports bar scene than many of the others in the area, and Sammy's Tap & Grill (2235 Avent Ferry Rd, Raleigh) is no exception.

If you're looking for cheap drinks, you're at the right place: be it beer or liquor, you'll always find something on special. Pints of PBR and Busch Light are around $2 every day (and why shouldn't they be?), but every day has its own deals as well. Monday and Wednesday are Pint Nights, with great specials on draft beer. Tuesday and Thursday almost everything is $2.50...if you need somewhere to get a cheap drink during the week, this is your spot.

The food is okay, mostly bar food but not bad. One thing to note: if you order the chips and salsa, you may want to order pico de gallo as well. The salsa is bland and a little runny, but the pico is just perfect. On the same note, the quesadillas are actually quite good.

There can be times when the service is a bit slow, particularly if the Wolfpack or the Steelers are on (Sammy's is the local Steeler fan bar). If you do get a bad server, though, there's a good chance you won't be seeing their face next time you show up: Sammy usually has a new crop of waitstaff around the beginning of each school year and the bad ones get weeded out pretty quickly.

Other than Carter-Finley, Sammy's is the absolute best place to watch State football. As a State fan, on a Saturday afternoon (or occasional Thursday) you will feel right at home. The place goes wild for big plays, and most everyone is focused on the action. Be sure to get there early, though, or you may have trouble finding a seat.
