As the Green movement causes industries everywhere to rethink the way they operate, New York nightlife proved late last year it’s not above the call of duty.
Greenhouse, Manhattan’s first ever eco-friendly nightclub, shed its light on the city’s club scene last November. Located at 150 Varick St in SoHo, Greenhouse is truly the first of its kind. The bi-level, 6,000 square foot event space is built entirely from recycled or recyclable materials, including bars made from recycled glass. The building also utilizes a carbon-countering program to offset energy used during construction and operation, which helped the venue earn L.E.E.D certification from the United States Green Buildings Council.
Yet for all the careful thought and planning that went into Greenhouse’s eco-friendly operation, it’s the nightclub’s interior décor, in sync with its globally conscious engineering, that generates the ultimate green experience. Greenhouse is simply an aesthetic triumph. The 5,000 individually fixed crystals that hang from the upstairs ceiling are something straight out of Superman’s foyer that render the space less like a nightclub and more a kind of psychedelic rainforest. Downstairs, artificial leaves lusciously foliate the walls and ceiling, and panoramic glass tables display miniature wildlife figurines (see slideshow).
Owner Jon Bakhshi, who established meatpacking mainstays Home and Guesthouse in 2005, acknowledges his nightclub’s relevance in a city where a globally conscious lifestyle is becoming increasingly more widespread.
“We are proud to be the first ones to create an event space that will merge nightlife with the positive steps towards addressing global concerns, and hope that eventually others will be encouraged to follow in our footsteps.”
It’s likely that others will. The reality is that going green, now more than ever, is very much en vogue. And in an industry where success depends on marketing what's hot, it’s hard to ignore the fact that going green will likely do as much to benefit the appeal and marketability of nightclubs like Greenhouse as it will for the environment. Regardless, if you haven't already, make checking out Greenhouse part of your own eco-friendly lifestyle. It’s one resource you'll be compelled to reuse.
