Red Wings mirrors we’re accustomed to. In fact, try finding a bar in downtown Detroit that doesn’t have a Red Wings mirror. The Detroiter Bar is no different. Its walls are lined with beer signs, sports posters and other signage so typical it hardly draws attention.
Then you notice a hockey stick hanging above a window. In Detroit bars, this too is remarkably common. The word “Malaka” is painted on the stick’s shaft. This is not common.
A few minutes later, you notice what looks like a street sign hanging behind the bar. “Malaka’s Bar” it reads. Hmm. Now you’re curious. So you keep looking. Another sign leading into the kitchen reads “Malaka’s Bar”. Even the cigarette machine reads “Malaka’s Bar & Grill”. Finally you ask the bartender what it means. She smiles.
“It’s the owner’s nickname,” she says. “It’s Greek. For asshole.”
SEE IT FOR YOURSELF: The Detroiter Bar is located at 655 Beaubien St. not far from Greektown.
