We Were Pirates CD release show @ Black Cat tuesday night with Mittenfields

The man behind We Were Pirates - Mike Boggs

Looking at the high resolution pictures that We Were Pirates recently sent with their press kit, it was uncanny how much all members of the band look like each other.

Oh but wait. We Were Pirates is the brainchild of one man: Mike Boggs. A native of the D.C. area, Boggs started writing material in 2007. Playing guitar, keyboard and drums on the recordings, Boggs didn't expect much to come from his efforts other than a level of perosnal satisfaction that comes from creative output. But his friends liked the tunes, their friends liked the tunes, so on and so forth. Before he knew it, Boggs was booking shows, jumping into the local scene and building up a small but devoted following.

Two years later, Boggs' work is paying off in the form of his second LP, Cutting Ties. The album is a collection of ten songs which includes a remake of "The Three of Us" which has been featured on Chicago radio.

Boggs Chicago good fortune doesn't end there. Chicago Tribune rock critic Greg Kot has pegged We Were Pirates as  possibly the next Fountains of Wayne. Such a prognostication is made more surprising when you learn that Boggs recorded everything in his own home studio, heavily utilizing his iBook in the production of Cutting Ties.

Tomorrow night will be a big one for We Were Pirates, playing with Mittenfields and Vox Pop at The Black Cat in D.C. The show has themes of both beginning and ending: The launch of Cutting Ties is the beginning of the rest of Boggs' musical career, and its the (brief) ending of Mittenfields live shows until early Fall, when fans can look forward to unbelievable things and a few great surprises when Mittenfields puts out their first LP.

The Baltimore Band Examiner has gotten exclusive access to early demos by Mittenfields, and this can be said: They are poised to put their mark on the D.C. indie scene and beyond with their forthcoming work. But for now, get out and celebrate with a great indie lineup tomorrow night. I'll see you there.
