Bergesen and Flanagan are back, Brian Roberts' back

  • March 11th, 2010 8:53 am ET

After a six-game skid, the Orioles are back in the win column with a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday night.  Brad Bergesen made his Spring debut after the now-infamous injury he suffered filming a commercial for the Orioles in December.

Bergesen allowed two runs off three hits in 1.1 innings.  He did not report any physical discomfort during the matchup, which was broadcast on MLB Network.

Luke Scott helped the Orioles earn the interleague victory with a two RBI performance.  Scott is hitting .500 in Spring Training thus far.  His plan is to hit .000 for the second half of this Spring schedule, finishing the Grapefruit League season with a .250 average.

Notably, the MLB article linked above describes Luke Scott as "first baseman Luke Scott."  Don't tell Gary Wigginkins about this.

Guess Who's Back?

Mike Flanagan, who pitched for the Orioles from 1975 - 1992 and served in the Orioles front office is heading to the broadcast booth.  He will join Gary "He got a hold of that one! It's way back!  It's caught in center field for out number two" Thorne for about half of MASN's regular season broadcasts.

Beloved for his playing career with the O's, which includes a World Series victory in 1983, Flanagan last served as one half of the much-maligned Flanagan-Duquette front office leadership duo.

Ailing Roberts

Brian Roberts, who is about to begin the first season of the four-year deal he signed last year, is being evaluated on Thursday for a lower back ailment.  Roberts believes he will be ready for Opening Day, though Andy MacPhail has expressed some concern about the distinct possibility that Roberts may start the year on the DL.

Robert Andino is considered Roberts' backup at second base, though the club could explore internal options if number 1's problems persist.

They may have to search internally or explore a trade if Roberts appears headed for a long-term DL stint.  Here is the list of free agent second basemen currently available, according to MLB Trade Rumors.
