In 1990, Alec Lazo became the United States Rising Star Latin Champion, which is not an easy thing to do at the national level. Since then, Lazo’s continually-impressive dance achievements have grown into an amazing dance career culminating with his own gorgeous studio in Palm Beach, the place where it all got started. To give you an idea of how great of a dancer Alec Lazo is, here is a partial list of his dance achievements since 1990:
U.S. International Rising Star Latin Champion
U.S. Nine-Dance Champion
U.S. Grand Finalist
U.S. Rhythm Finalist
Seven U.S. Latin Top Ten Finishes
Ohio Star Ball Latin Rising Star Champion
Texas Challenge Rising Star Grand Champion
Heritage Classic Rising Star Latin Champion
Sunshine State Rhythm and Smooth Champion
Grand National Rhythm and Smooth Champion
Northwest Star Ball Rhythm and Smooth Champion
Northwest Star Ball Nine-Dance Champion
Southern States Open Rhythm Champion
Top Teacher: Dance Heat U.S.A. 2009
Alec Lazo has also appeared numerous times on television and in various theaterical settings. Today, Lazo keeps a busy schedule traveling across the United States judging competitions, lecturing, coaching, consulting, and performing. He has also hosted several national PBS specials including “WXEL Presents,” “Tango: The Spirit of Argentina,” and “Fiesta at the Philharmonic.”
Alec Lazo now owns the Paramount Ballroom on the beautiful island of Palm Beach, FL. Because of a strong passion for teaching youth, Lazo founded the Palm Beach Atlantic University Ballroom Dance Club, where he trains college students and gives them the opportunity to engage in real Dancesport competition (see video below). He hopes to one day teach for the university and start a collegiate team. Open dances are held on Sunday nights for both members and non-members, with a $12 cover charge. Alec is a Fellow NADTA in American Style Rhythm and Smooth and Licentiate ISTD in Latin.
Capturing Lazo's sense of humor about ballroom dancers is a small but true list of definitions about the journey of a ballroom student on the Paramount Ballroom website's "Expertise" page:
1. Beginning dancer; Knows nothing.
2. Intermediate dancer; Knows everything. Too good to dance with beginners.
3. Hotshot dancer; Too good to dance with anyone.
4. Advanced dancer; Dances everything. Especially with beginners.
5. Master Dancer; Knows nothing.
Dancers across the country could not agree more. To begin your journey into dance or to become a master dancer yourself, you can contact Alec Lazo for coaching or other dance services through Facebook or through the studio website. Hours of operation for the Paramount Ballroom are Monday thru Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
