'Tis the season for blueberries

Set your alarm, pre-program your coffee maker, and get out your berry-pickin' basket! The time has come to fill up on the season's best, and what better way to indulge in some of the freshest berries around than to head to The Berry Patch in south Kansas City.

Berry-pickers of all ages will enjoy hunting through 20 acres of fresh, delicious blueberries. You can also pick strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries depending on the time of year, but you will want to check out their picking report before planning your trip down there.

Packed full of natural antioxidants, berries are some of the most recommended fruit to eat regularly. All fruits have different health benefits, but blueberries are especially favored because of their immune system-boosting powers. Blueberries seem to crop up (no pun intended...well, maybe) on many top-10 What-to-Eat food lists because of their health benefits. Check out this list published by the Mayo Clinic of their top-ranked health foods.

And IF this hasn't yet convinced you to find your inner blueberry fiend, check out the "1st-Timer Info" tab on theberrypatchonline.com. Do you see all those incredible recipes? Word has it they bake the best blueberry muffins around but you must arrive somewhat early to taste one before they run out.

Here is my version of a blueberry turnover (with a little help from my good friend: tube of refrigerated crescent roll dough).

Ingredients

- 2 tubes refrigerated crescent roll dough (I opt for the reduced fat version)
- 1 cup frozen or fresh blueberries
- 1/4 cup light corn syrup
- 2-3 Tbl. sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 Tbl. fresh lemon juice
- 3 Tbl. flour

Directions: Preheat oven to 375. Open crescent rolls and peel apart. On a greased cookie sheet or baking pan, gently stretch individual triangles into slightly larger forms. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, combine all other ingredients except flour and bring to a gentle simmer. Simmer for a few minutes until blueberries have cooked down and mixture is somewhat runny. Take off heat and whisk in flour to thicken. Taste mixture - add sweetener to taste.

A few notes: I made mine slightly less sweet and topped the turnover with a powdered sugar icing which complemented the tart filling beautifully. If you prefer a thicker filling which may be easier to work with, add more flour or cornstarch until desired consistency is reached.

Spoon blueberry mixture onto individual crescent rolls with a tablespoon. Working quickly, bring corners of crescent roll dough together, pinching off the seams. This is messy, so just have fun with it!

Bake 15 minutes at 375 or until tops start to brown. Let cool and top with a powdered sugar glaze, light frosting, and/or more blueberries. Enjoy with a big cup of coffee!

Great job Lisa! This was the first article I was able to get my crummy web browser at work to open. Hope I can see more of your work; those turnovers sound delicious!

PS - about how many does this yield?

Anne - I think there are...8 (?) rolls in each tube, so 2 tubes would be 16 total. They're small, so if you think 16 sounds like a lot, they'll go fast. :) Enjoy!
