Sweet cherry filling, sandwiched between delicious, buttery crumbs can be found at Edelweiss Café and Bakery in Raleigh, NC. Though sweeter than typical German cake, this kirsch-streuselkeutchen, or cherry streusel cake, is excellent for the American dessert palate. There is the perfect balance of crumb crust and topping to the sweet, gently-tart cherry filling. If you perhaps decided a long time ago that you are not a fan of cherry fillings, give this morsel a try! You may just change your mind.

Streuselkeutchen simply means streusel cake where there is a definite streusel topping. Streusel topping is a mixture of butter, sugar, and flour (with some variations including nuts and spices). It is made into a crumb mixture then sprinkled over the top of cakes, pies, muffins, etc. Some fruit streuselkeutchen resemble a thick cake with fruit filling and of course, the streusel topping. Others, like that of Edelweiss’s cherry crumb cake, are thin with a crumbly base, thick filling, and a generous serving of streusel topping. Edelweiss’s cake is so scrumptious in-part because the top is completely covered with the crumb mixture.

Edelweiss offers a variety of other desserts including black forest cake and apple strudel. They also offer a selection of breads like laugenstange (pretzel rolls), broetchen (German rolls), German rye bread, and more.

Should you prefer lunch before dessert, order off of their café menu. The wiener schnitzel with German potato salad is very good. The pork loin is perfectly thin and tender. The breading for the schnitzel is wonderfully crispy. Combined with the tangy German potato salad, it's a great lunch.

Steve and Nicole Reed originally opened Edelweiss in Selma, NC, in 2007. After two and a half years, the couple decided to move their business to Raleigh.

Edelweiss is located in the City Market Square in downtown Raleigh.  Just off of Davie St., the cafe is on a smaller road, # 317 Blake St. (between Blount and Person streets).

Yumm! I haven't had great German desserts since I lived over there a couple of years ago. Great review!
