Blue Moon Bakery in Cary, North Carolina, produces some of the most delicious and beautiful cakes in the Triangle. An eye-appealing and taste-bud-tantalizing cake requires attention to detail, organization, patience and a steady hand. This examiner had a chance to meet the head decorator of Blue Moon, Lily, and was inspired to write this piece.
While there may be a handful of experienced cake decorators among us, many opt to order a professional cake from a reliable bakery because of all the work and thought involved in producing a cake. If you are insistent upon making your own cake to save a few dollars, read on for instructions on how to bake and decorate a cake from home. You just may conclude a Blue Moon Bakery cake is best!
COVERING A CAKE BOARD
Video demonstration is below.
Use a sturdy wooden board that is 6 inches longer and wider than your cake. This will give you a 3-inch border around the circumference. A wooden Lazy Susan works well for round cakes; these wooden turn tables common in several sizes. Your local wood shop may also be able to cut plywood into your specific size.
Cover the board with a sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil ensuring you have 1 to 2 inches of excess foil to tape on the back of the cake board; use two sheets if one sheet is not wide enough for the board. Use clear packing tape instead of gift-wrapping tape.
Cover the board again with wax paper, using two sheets if necessary. Tape the excess wax paper over the excess foil, directly on to the board.
