At this time of year, lots of exciting garden catalogs are being delivered in the mail. There are hundreds, probably thousands of plant and seed catalogs available in print or on the Internet. Here are some of the more fancy, glossy catalogs you can find in print. This is not a comprehensive list, but just a few of of the companies that have invested a little extra to give their catalogs a posh presentation. Please note that the beauty of the catalog does not necessarily have anything to do with the pricing of product or quality of planting material you will receive if you order from them. In fact, some of the drearier looking catalogs may produce wonderful specimens, products or ship plants of the highest quality. These are three catalogs that just came out that are designed to impress.
Check out Heronswood catalogs for some of the most recent and unusual recent plant introductions. They put out a catalog that is designed and presented with enough appeal to use for entertaining reading material. Photos are outstanding and information is good. But the unusual selection and handsome design of the catalog make it stand out. The 2010 catalog just came out with a splendid black Hellebore photo on the cover.
Another interesting presentation can be found with Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. This catalog comes in an unusual, large, wide format. Photographs are gorgeous and the choice in edible seeds is vast and impressive. The 2010 catalog has its cover graced with a hand-painted illustration of a large squash.
The White Flower Farm catalogs have been around for years. Most of their catalogs come in less conventional size formats and are handsomely presented. Although these also have fine photos, the information on each plant is highly detailed and plant names frequently come with pronunciation guides that can be very helpful. The White Flower Farm catalog is not only attractive, but it is good, educational reading.
