A trellis is a structure that will give your plants a form to clamber up. Trellises can come in any shape or size and can be made out of metal, wood, vinyl or other materials. Whatever you choose for buying or building your trellis, make sure it will handle outdoor weather over time.
Using a free-standing trellis can introduce a vertical element where you want height. Set up a trellis to mask plain walls. Add trellises to form fencing or create wall dividers. Twine colorful vines up plain trellises or use sparce climbers on decorative trellises. You can also decorate a vegetable garden with a trellis that will support vining melons, cucumbers, pole beans, peas or other fruits and vegetables.
A trellis can add character to your garden. A bamboo trellis is a great way to accent a Japanese garden or add a tropical feel to a landscape. Metal can offer formal wrought iron for a Mediterranean theme or the delicate curls of filigree trellis can create fantasy. Even a simple white wood or vinyl trellis can add the feel of a cottage garden or an English landscape.
You can even build your own trellis. Make it with pipe, bend and twist heavy copper wire, tack together wood strips or pieces of cane. Add interesting fill like screening, decorative wire meshes, colorful outdoor fabrics or other flexible textures.
Consider adding a trellis or two to your garden. It will help you grow colorful vines, add new shapes and forms to the landscape and create décor to color your garden design.

The first trellis I have memories of is the one my grandfather built for my grandmother. It arched over a sidewalk. Many years later, I approached the new owners of my grandparents house, bought the trellis, and refurbished it for my mother. Amazingly, after 40+ years, it was in remarkable good shape!
Nice morning glories. my mom always made sure we had a trellis over the window the sun hit early in the am, so the flowers would open and we had shade in that part of the living room.
