A good focal point makes a landscape exciting (Photo by Jane Gates)
Any successful landscape needs a focal point!
A focal point is simply the most eye-catching space in your garden. Whether you are designing a room, painting a piece of artwork or creating a landscape a focal point is a MUST. It will be the most interesting part of your garden and a landscape without a focal point is just plain boring!
You can create secondary focal points – points of interest that are less riveting than your main focal point – that will lead the eye to the main event. Excellent focal point materials would be objects like boulders, sculptures, theme samples (like an old stage coach in a Western style garden or a gnarly tree trunk in a woodland garden), water features, murals and specimen plantings. Even a showy seating area with unusually shaped, colored or styled furniture can form a focal point.
A focal point can be accented by leading the eye up to something interesting with paths or fencing or decorative border materials. A fence itself can become a focal point if it leads to an ornate gate, an archway or an unexpected doorway.
Focal points can be created with any material. Have fun deciding on what kind of focal point would create the best conversation piece in your garden.

This I needed since our back yard is so strung out. I need to create that focal point for sure. Once I decide on just what I want it to be.
WE won't even talk about the front sand lot. LOL
I'm thinking of a dry creek bed as the focal point of my backyard. Would that work?
