Cheesequake State Park got its name from the native Lenape word "Cheseh-oh-ke meaning "upland village". Features within this park include : a coastal salt marsh, fresh water marsh, white cedar swamp, pine-oak forest, oak-hard wood forest and small bog.
Located in the urban northeast and bisected by the Garden State Parkway, it is a marvel for all it contains.
There are five designated trails within the park. Four are desinated walking or hiking, another is for hiking and mountain biking. Trails range from 1.5 to 3.5 miles, difficulty ranges from easy to moderate. Although there are boardwalks in many areas, waterproof shoes are recommended.
Directions: Take the Garden State Parkway to Exit 120. Head south about a half mile on Laurence Harbor Parkway and turn right on to Morristown Avenue at a traffic light. Proceed about a half mile to Gordon Road and turn right. In a half mile you will reach the park entrance and park office. State Park signs are posted at critical intersections along the following routes: GSP, Route 34 South and North. The park is open year-round during daylight hours. An admission fee is charged between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Weekday admission: $5.00 per car. Weekend admission : $10.00 per car Campsites are available. Other parks reviewed:
