One essential product for every baby, and usually the one many parents spend the most time searching for is the crib. It is usually the biggest investment you made next to the car seat and stroller travel system. Being a new parent comes with many stresses, one of them shouldn't have to be the safety of your baby while they sleep however, the thing many dread hearing has happened--a crib recall.

A few of the complaints that prompted the recalls were:

-67 incidents in the United States, 43 in Canada
-20 falls
-15 entrapments
-10 incidents of drop-side detachment
-4 suffocations (all fatalities in the U.S.)

Taken directly from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) site, the following cribs are affected:

-Stork Craft drop-side cribs and Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo
-Cribs with plastic trigger and one-hand-system drop-side hardware
-Stork Craft cribs with manufacturing and distribution dates between January 1993 and October 2009
-Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo that have manufacturing dates between October 1997 and December 2004

Retailers in the U.S. and Canada selling the cribs include BJ's Wholesale Club, J.C. Penney, Kmart, Meijer, Sears, USA Baby, and Wal-Mart stores and online at Amazon.com, Babiesrus.com, Costco.com, Target.com, and Walmart.com from January 1993 through October 2009. The cribs retail value is between $100 and $400.

What to do if you have been affected by the recall:

-Find the Manufacture Date, Model Number, Crib Name, Country of Origin and the Contact Info for the company on the assembly instructions attached to the mattress support board.

-Contact Stork Craft with the information via telephone or their website

-Be patient, with the recall Stork Craft has admitted that they have been overloaded at the time

In the meantime, there are other options for making sure your precious one sleeps well. Co-sleeping may be the only option for some, be sure to read Dr. Sears and his safe sleeping with baby tips. Other options are checking on websites like Craigslist to find another crib or borrow one from a friend or family member.
