Not that it will surprise Baby Boomers. But for others it may be a little surprising that the number one selling album of the last decade was a compilation of all the Beatles' No. 1 hits.

Appropriate, the album is "1".

According to the sales tracking by Nielsen, the Beatles' hits compilation sold 11.5 million units, just beating out edging 'N Sync's "No Strings Attached," with 11.1 million.

A look at the songs on "1" is a trip back to the heyday of Baby Boomer music:
1. "Love Me Do"
2. "From Me to You"
3. "She Loves You"
4. "I Want to Hold Your Hand"
5. "Can't Buy Me Love"
6. "A Hard Day's Night"
7. "I Feel Fine"
8. "Eight Days a Week"
9. "Ticket to Ride"
10. "Help!"
11. "Yesterday"
12. "Day Tripper"
13. "We Can Work It Out"
14. "Paperback Writer"
15. "Yellow Submarine"
16. "Eleanor Rigby"
17. "Penny Lane"
18. "All You Need Is Love"
19. "Hello Goodbye"
20. "Lady Madonna"
21. "Hey Jude"
22. "Get Back"
23. "The Ballad of John & Yoko"
24. "Something"
25. "Come Together"
26. "Let It Be"
27. "The Long and Winding Road"

It is also a songbook that tracks the Beatles from their beginning to their end. The songs take us from their mop top days through the movies years to the year of hare krishna and psychedelia, and ultimately to their break-up.

They introduced themselves with an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, playing:

  • "All My Loving"
  • "Till There Was You"
  • "She Loves You"
  • "I Saw Her Standing There"
  • "I Want to Hold Your Hand"

They said good-bye with a rooftop concert at their Abbey Road studio in 1969, playing: "Get Back", "Don't Let Me Down", "I've Got a Feeling", "One After 909", and "Dig a Pony".

The "Long and Winding Road", their last No. 1 song, was on the "Let it Be" album released in 1970.

It's hard to believe that they produced so much music -- and so much enduring music -- in such a relatively short time.

The"1" compilation was released in 2000 and obviously endured through the rest of the decade in terms of overall sales.
