YONKERS, NY, Oct. 27 – European brands moved up in Consumer Reports annual reliability survey.

The magazine cited Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes-Benz for their improvement in the rankings.

The Volkswagen Golf and VW’s coupe-like CC sedan earned top scores. The Volkswagen Jetta’s reliability recommendation has been extended to its diesel-powered models.

In addition, the VW Passat and Audi A3 hatchback have moved up to average reliability rankings and were joined by the VW Tiguan SUV. The Audi Q7 SUV continued to score much worse than average, but was not as bad as its near twin, the VW Touareg. The Touareg had the worst new-car predicted reliability score in the survey.

The magazine also noted that Mercedes-Benz has improved significantly in the rankings, with most of its models rated average or better.

That was not the case for BMW. The 535i sedan and X3 SUV declined in reliability, and the 135i sedan and convertible, debuting this year, scored below average. While some BMW models have average or better reliability, the magazine has put only the 328i sedans and coupes on its recommended list.

All of Volvo’s sedans were ranked average or better, but the XC90 SUV scored below average. Porsche, which normally does well in the survey, saw its Boxster roadster drop to below average. It was removed from the magazine’s recommended list. On the other hand, the Cayenne SUV improved to average.

The survey, which covered 1.4 million vehicles, was based on responses from owners who subscribe to Consumer Reports or its web site, www.consumerreports.org.

Full results will appear in the December issue of Consumer Reports, which comes out Nov. 3, It will also appear on the web site.
