The Tesla Model S will be unveiled next week. The company
promises it will go 150 miles on each electric charge and start at
$49,900.
Tesla Motors announced today its planned Model S all-electric luxury sedan will have a base price of $49,900 after an expected $7,500 federal tax credit, the company announced today.
The Silicon Valley-based automaker said it will reveal its new product next week and expects to begin mass-producing it in late 2011.
Tesla previously released the teaser shot at right that shows a car with more mainstream styling than the company's existing product, an electric 2-seat convertible, or the upcoming Fisker Karma $90,000 electric car.
Initial estimates show the base Model S going 150 miles per charge, with a pricier model doubling that range.
As planned, the Tesla Model S will be the first mass-market all-electric car that will be legal on U.S. highways, and it will be priced comparably to gasoline-powered midsize luxury sedans.
Full specifications are not available, but Tesla has said the Model S will follow the Roadster model in offering very high performance; the $109,000 Roadster goes from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds on a full charge.
Tesla has been manufacturing the Roadster in limited numbers, about 20 per week, over the past year. It delivered its 250th vehicle this month.

That looks like a gorgeous car (under the canvas). Out of my range, but gorgeous.
