Audi announced today that for the third year running they will appear in the much anticipated Super Bowl commercials, this time showcasing their "Green Car of the Year", the A3 TDI.
Audi say the commercial will have a tongue-in-cheek environmental theme and will feature rock legends Cheap Trick providing the backing sound track with a reinterpretation of one of their classic songs.
The "Green Car of the Year Award" was a major coup for the company as few people expected a diesel powered vehicle to be associated with "green technology." However, Audi has invested significant technological research into diesel power in their road cars and their now world famous racing cars both here and in Europe, particularly in Le Mans events.
According to the company, the A3 TDI accounts for 53% of sales in their diesel line and they have enjoyed considerable consumer demand for diesel powered cars in the USA in a very short period. The A3 TDI is capable of achieving a remarkable 42mpg.
“Despite the difficulties the automotive industry has faced, our brand has continued to grow through this past year, introducing new and exciting models, and getting people talking about Audi,” said Scott Keogh, chief marketing officer, Audi of America. “In short, the Super Bowl has worked. The brand has never been stronger, market share is increasing and we are setting the stage to increase our momentum in 2010 by letting more of America in on the great secret that is Audi TDI clean diesel technology.”
Last year Audi blew us away with a slick video featuring British action star, Jason Statham, jumping from different vehicles through the ages before getting into the hot A6. That car featured prominently in his Transporter 3 film, but it's not likely we'll see Mr. Statham hoofing about in the A3, or will we? We'll have to wait and see - that and whether the Minnesota Vikings are there at the Super Bowl too.
In the meantime you can enjoy a clip of last year's famous Audi Super Bowl commercial below. Incidentally, movie car chase fans will probably agree that Audi has the unoffical crown of best car chase action sequence from the 1998 movie, Ronin, which starred Robert De Niro and Jean Reno.
