April Mustang of the Month

Today is the second to last Monday of the month and that means that, along with the Mustang Owners Club of South Eastern Michigan (MOCSEM), I am bringing you the Mustang of the Month. Last month, we recognized MOCSEM president Mike Rey’s 2005 Mustang GT and this month we are featuring a classic Mustang - Ken Janus's 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 428 Super Cobra Jet.

If you are unfamiliar with the Super Cobra Jet package, it started with the 428 cubic inch Super Cobra Jet (SCJ) engine, offering 335 horsepower - the same as the non-Super version of the 428 Cobra Jet. Unlike the standard 428 Cobra Jet, the SCJ featured rotating assembly items (crankshaft, rods, pistons, harmonic balancer) along with an external oil cooler to better handle prolonged high RPM. Basically, the 1969 428 Super Cobra Jet was built to be raced, emphasized by the fact that the SCJ package was available only with a 3.91 or 4.30 rear gear ratio. The 1969 Mustang Mach 1 428 Super Cobra Jet was one of the most powerful Ford-built Mustangs in the line’s history and Ken Janus has made a variety of additions to this legendary performance package to make it even more powerful and more unique.

Ken had this to say about his gorgeus classic Mustang:
When I found this car it was simply a rolling shell with no interior, no electrical, and no brake or gas lines. It just had the gauges, a few pieces of the fold-down deck, and the engine and transmission grease-packed in bags.  FINALLY my job is done after 3 years of research and parts gathering and another year of putting it back together. It was worth every penny and hour spent. I cannot even begin to explain how satisfied I am with the end result, as everyone who has seen this car live and in person says the pictures do not do the car justice.

Black cherry is the color (my favorite color). The engine is the original 428 super Cobra Jet motor which I had rebuilt with a mild cam and roller rockers, Demon carb, MSD ignition, SCJ package, and air. It is a true "R" code car so it has the shaker hood set-up. The transmission is a TKO 600 5spd, with aluminum drive shaft. The rear end has a 391 "n" case 31 spline traction lock gear. The axles were shortened, ladder bars were added, and disc brakes were installed. The interior is black, the steering wheel is a rim-blow tilt wheel, and the rear seat is a fold-down. Up front is custom heated seats, a Shelby console, and power windows. The stereo is Alpine with an MP3 player, a couple of amps, component speakers, and a 12" subwoofer with a custom Cobra speaker grill.

My first year of showing the car I received a total of 28 trophies including 2 Best of Shows and a Best Interior. The second year out I was selected to attend the All Ford Nationals in Carlisle for the Cobra Jet Reunion and was in the "G" building with all of the famous 1968 428cj racers. It was a real honor to be in the same room with these guys.

Congratulations to Ken Janus and his gorgeous 1969 Mach 1 428 Super Cobra Jet for being the Detroit Autos Examiner’s April Mustang of the Month!
