According to Automotive News, Toyota is planning on closing its NUMMI plant in California--which is also the company's oldest American plant--in March of 2010.
NUMMI--which stands for New United Motor Manufacturing Incorporated--currently builds the company's Corolla sedan and Tacoma small pickup truck. The plant was once a 50/50 joint venture between Toyota and General Motors, but GM left the venture when it filed for bankruptcy this year.
NUMMI employs 4,700 workers, and it is the company's only UAW plant. It is unclear what will happen to those workers after the plant is shut down.
