2011 Mustang becomes the first 300-30 car (horsepower and mpgs, that is)

The EPA has just certified Ford's 2011 Mustang V6 to 30+ mpg (highway). What's significant about that number is the engine is rated to 305 hp. Such results are a tribute to the company's engineers and the modern automotive electronics and aerodynamics available to them.

Back in 1988 when Jose Canseco became the first 40-40 (home runs and stolen bases) man in baseball history, Mickey Mantle remarked that if he knew it would be such a big deal he would have done it earlier (and no doubt he could have). Now Ford is noting that the Mustang V6 is the first production car to have more than 300 hp while attaining better than 30 mpg—and chances are it couldn't have been done before because the technology wasn't there.

(Here's a bunch more 2011 Mustang technology and facts, and a test drive video)
