GM's follow-up to the Chevy Volt EV in the US will be the Cadillac Converj, a luxury EV first shown at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, according to published reports in the Detroit News.

The Converj, which utilizes much of the same technology as the Chevrolet Volt, was included in a production plan Cadillac officials presented to GM's board of directors last week, according to sources familiar with the plan, the Detroit News reported.

Industry analysts see the move as an opportunity for GM to spread the cost of EV vehicle development across more models, particularly those that can command a higher retail price.

"You can charge more for a Caddy than a Chevrolet," auto analyst Jim Hall of 2953 Analytics told the Detroit News.

The Converj will join the Volt (available in late 2010) and the Opel Ampera (available by mid-2011) although no production date or pricing of the Converj has been announced.
