2009 auto show calendar gears up under cloud of uncertainty

Last week, the U.S. auto industry received a $17 billion stocking stuffer from Uncle Sam. The money will help, but it could soon turn into a lump of coal if a rapid turnaround is not realized at GM and Chrysler.

The auto industry is in for a rough 2009 and Ford, GM and Chrysler will likely bear the brunt. At a time when dealerships are traditionally slimming down previous year’s inventories and stocking up on hot new vehicles, major automakers are instead closing or idling factories, mothballing newly introduced models and scrapping redesign plans for others. 

A key component to the building buzz around new model year is the kickoff of the auto show calendar. Aside from the initial press days, auto shows are massive star-studded events that bring consumers face-to-face with the latest and greatest that the automotive world has to offer. From redesigns and concepts, to custom cars and in-vehicle technology, auto shows are a virtual candy shop for the car enthusiast.

Last year, the Los Angeles International Auto Show shifted its dates from January to early November and is now the inaugural event of season. But the central show of the year, one which typically sets the tone for others to follow, is the North American International Auto show, held annually in Detroit. Anchored by the strength of the Detroit Big Three, NAIAS is by far the largest, but this year, it promises to be much different. Lavish receptions will be scaled down. Manufacturers are reducing press conference schedules and some are eliminating them altogether.

Like the industry these shows represent, the mood will likely be far more somber this year. But for the true auto enthusiast, there still is nothing better.

The Washington Auto Show runs from February 4th-8th, 2009 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
