Do you have a disability and can't pump your own gas?

Self service gas stations are popping up everywhere. I abhor pumping my own gas but those “We’ll pump your gas, clean your windshield and do it all with a smile and a tip of our cap” gas stations are forever gone, just a distant memory…. So I’m stuck, BIG TIME having to pump that sucker full of gas myself.

A few days ago, I was pumping gas into my car and another vehicle pulled up behind me. An elderly woman struggled to get out of her car, it was quite a feat to say the least. She was clearly disabled. Without hesitation, I immediately went into Girl Scout mode and offered to pump her gas. She was beyond grateful and suffice it to say, she blessed me for eternity. My curiosity kicked in and I asked why didn’t she request help from the station attendant?  “Oh no, they can’t pump your gas, this is a self-service station,” she replied.

Are you disabled or do you know someone who like you, is unable to pump their own gas at a self-service station? Well, here is what you should know regarding the law and self-service gas stations:

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires self-serve gas stations to provide equal access to their customers with disabilities. Upon request, an attendant must provide refueling assistance and the disabled customer must still get the self-service rate. Gas station management must display signage to let disabled patrons know they may request assistance either by honking or signaling a gas station employee. Some stations provide a call button. A gas station or convenience store that sells gas is not required to provide such service at any time it is operating on a remote control basis with a single employee, but is encouraged to do so, when possible.
