Course Description:
Sensory processing disorder (SPD) - insurance companies won't reimburse for it, doctors dismiss it, and teachers don't understand it, even as parents cling to the words as a mantra of the day. Being able to tell a parent, teacher, or a co-professional that the child with whom you are working is not processing information readily—and how you can tell—is valuable information. It allows the therapist or teacher to change their approach and to buy into the process, not as a “mechanic” but as a participant in the child's learning process. There are however a body of fictions surrounding SPD. To counter these widely held fictional realities, it is important to understand the theory behind the therapy and crucial to have a clear understanding of what and how our bodies receive and translate as environmental cues. In order to do this, it is essential to stay current with the latest research.
This exciting seminar is an innovative training program that will provide you with current information on SPD, assessment and the tools and approaches to enhance sensory development in these clients. Effective methods for preventing under- and over-stimulation of the sensory system will be presented. Participants will learn how to improve clinical evaluations through observations and utilize Sensory Integration Therapy techniques that can be applied in a variety of settings including clinics, schools, homes, and other ecologies. Bridging evidence with therapeutic intervention, this workshop will impart to participants strong clinical reasoning and problem solving skills, enhancing the development of sensory intervention that is applicable to any environment. Learning Objectives: The Participant will be able to:
1. Explain the difference between the terms Sensory Integration (SI), Sensory ProcessingDisorder (SPD) and Sensory Modulation Disorder.
2. Describe the primary sensory systems affected by SPD and recognize outward signs of dysfunction in each system.
3. Identify several standardized and non-standardized tools used to evaluate for the presence of SPD.
4. Show that we all use sensory stimuli to improve attention, focus and self-regulation.
5. Specify treatment techniques that can be used in any setting to address dysfunction for each of the sensory systems.
6. Recognize the effects of the sympathetic nervous system on overarousal and how to help mitigate this.
7. Demonstrate how to help your clients/students utilize tools that improve selective focus and self-regulation.
8. Determine which sensory issue to address first based on assessment and subsequent treatment goals.

Meet Your Program Instructor:
Ann C. House, MOT, OTR/L, is a licensed occupational therapist with more than 20 years experience primarily in the field of pediatrics including neonatal intensive care. She is the founder and CEO of Kidswork, Inc., an occupational and speech therapy practice providing evaluation, treatment and home therapy programs for families. Ms. House is a consultant on sensory integration and sensory processing issues, works extensively with young children diagnosed with autism and is a contract therapist for Evangelical Community Hospital for pediatric and work hardening clients. She holds certifications by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, as a Blankenship FCE evaluator, an Interactive Metronome Trainer, and is certified to administer and interpret Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests (SIPT). Ms. House is an experienced seminar leader having presented at the Pennsylvania College of Technology, Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association (POTA) conference and at meetings throughout Pennsylvania. She received her Master's from the University of Puget Sound and had her master's research published in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy. Ann is a member of the professional advisory panels for both Pennsylvania College of Technology's Occupational Therapy Assistant major and Geisinger Health Plan's Outpatient Rehabilitation Therapy Service Guidelines. Ms. House is a member of the American Occupational Therapy Association, the Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association, is past committee chair of their Developmental Disabilities Special Interest Section, and is included in the 2006/2007 Manchester Who's Who Among Executive and Professional Women.
