'Adam' manages to spin Asperger's Syndrome with love and humility

Whenever a film is made that spotlights persons living on the Autism Spectrum, many of us in the community will come running.

Just look at all the folks over 20 years later who still use "Rain Man" as the best movie explanation for autism!

But "Adam", a new release this week from Fox Searchlight, manages to infuse a kind of warmth and tenderness that Dustin and Tom weren't required to muster.  (Well, except maybe for that very last scene.)

This film manages to capture both the innocence and sometimes awkardness of Asperger's all the while reminding you that Adam is a real person.  You know.  Just like you!

'Adam' may just be the new film, in some ways but not all, that you use to describe the person in your life who experiences Asperger's or even to describe autism in general.  It may not be the perfect intellectual answer, but it is a start!

Even though it was released on July 29, 'Adam' is not currently playing in Charlotte or surrounding areas.  However, watch for its release at the Manor Theatre soon.  Also keep an eye out on this page for other recommendations of films that contain AU content.  Many can be checked out from your local library's DVD and VHS sections.

Have you seen it? What is it about? From the picture, it looks like it's about an adult and his relationships, but is there content that I'd worry about my teen seeing?

The film is rated PG-13 and focuses not only on his friendship/relationship with a woman but also the death of his father. There is some violence and sexual content, so you may want to view it first and then decide. Since it is and indie film, it may take a few weeks to get to some theatres. Please write back with your own review, Laura!
