Reviewing: Cancer is a Bitch

*

Charming, fearless and heart-wrenchingly honest, Gail Konop Baker invites readers to travel back with her, through the journey that changed her life, her battle with breast cancer. Her memoir, Cancer is a Bitch is as effective as it is enthralling. Readers get a closer look at how breast cancer shakes the foundation of a mother, daughter, and wife. The dreaded C invades every cell in her being and soul, yet for Baker, hope has a way of seeping in past the fear and leading the race on the road to recovery and rejuvenation.

At forty-five years young, Baker is busy breathing life into her novel, ironically about a protagonist who finds a lump in her breast, when life begins imitating art. A mother of three, wife and world creator, Baker is the consummate juggler of balancing her family’s universe. But, she can’t control any of the plot twists that begin to spiral out in her own story.

She stumbles, falling in self-pity, angst and fear only to pick herself up, dust herself off, and embrace that the journey, whatever it is – is hers to ride. Baker retells, without fear, of her diagnosis, struggles and ultimate triumph. The book reads more like a fictional novel; easy to slip in between the pages and near impossible to put down. With compassion, awareness and courage, Baker shares her weakest moments and lifts readers up in her hopeful victory and ultimate message of courage and love.

We cannot always control the path which we are set upon. But, we can fight, we can evolve and embrace ourselves, and we are capable of greater things yet to come. The sky is the limit for Gail Konop Baker, and her continued journey is one not to be missed.
