Perth-based dance group Empire of the Sun have walked away with four ARIA Awards, after Australia's premier awards took place at Sydney's ACER Arena last night.

Nominated for 11 awards in total, the band took out Best Pop Release and Single of the Year for their song Walking on a Dream, as well as Album of the Year, also titled "Walking on a Dream". The band also picked up Best Group, somewhat controversially, given co-collaborator Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore fell out over the direction of the band earlier this year, the latter having not been sighted during any of EOTS's shows this year.

Oz rock veterans AC/DC, whose latest album "Black Ice" won the award for Highest Selling Artist were also winners on the night. As well as that award, they received the more critically-based award Best Rock Album, beating out stiff mainstream competition in Jet and Eskimo Joe, as well as two of 2009's breakthrough artists, the Drones and the Temper Trap.

It was a disappointing evening for Melbourne's Temper Trap, the band interrupting their European tour to attend the awards, only to leave empty-handed. They were nominated for four awards.

Best Children's Album went to the all-stars of children's entertainment, the Wiggles and their album "Go Bananas!" With the win, the skivvy-clad group further their record feat of winning the most ARIA Awards in any one category.

Other winners included the Presets (Best Dance Release - Talk Like That), Hilltop Hoods (Best Urban Release - State of the Art), Sarah Blasko (Best Female Act) and Bertie Blackman (Best Independent Release - Secrets and Lies).
