No recession here! Opening day at the Brimfield antiques show

No recession here! Opening day at the Brimfield antiques show

The largest antiques show in the country rocked on it's spring opening today in Brimfield MA.

I saw gold estate jewelry slapped on scales and paid for from wads of 100 dollar bills. There were high end antique book ends priced at $300 and up I saw one buyer take 3 sets.

Furniture was selling well, FURNITURE was selling well! For those in the antiques business, furniture has been a very slow product line for the past few years.

Nearly every dealer I talked to had a smile on their face and had just completed a transaction, or was about to.

It took me 20 minutes to find a parking space, and at lunch time when I met Diane Zwieg my friend and the editor of iAntiqueonline.com the food court was packed!

I asked nearly 50 people how the day was for them, and all except for a couple said great. Last year at the spring show opening, most people said either slow or ok when I asked that question.

  • My take-a-way. The antiques market is thriving! The reasons others gave were:
  • It's Brimfield, you can always sell at Brimfield.
  • A lot of people are investing in antiques after getting burned on Wall St.
  • Less dealers are turning to eBay as a source to buy and sell antiques so the shows are picking up the slack.
  • The economy is picking up.
  • Good stuff sells, and people usually bring their better stuff to the shows.

I also secured a couple interviews for the AuctionWally Show, and was able to promote my online auctions and special Mega Memorabilia and Autograph Auction to a very receptive group of people.

It seemed that everyone was in a good mood. Because of a very busy schedule, I had only planned to cover opening day of the show this year, but after the response I got to the  promotions I was working on, I'll be going back at least one more this week, maybe twice. The show runs until Sunday.

Take a look at the slide show to see what went on. I'll be doing some price reports from the show as well.

I Would love to attend this next year if it is at all in our budget to do so. I am certainly planning for it. Wonderful job, as usual!
