BURBANK, Calif. -
The Walt Disney Company announced on Monday, August 31, 2009, that it would buy Marvel Entertainment, aka Marvel Comics. The deal we’re told, is worth about 4 billion dollars. Marvel shareholders will get $30 in cash and about ¾ of a Disney share for each Marvel share they own.
“We believe that adding Marvel to Disney’s unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation,” Disney CEO Robert A. Iger said in a statement.
“Disney is the perfect home for Marvel’s fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses. This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney’s tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world,” Marvel’s CEO Ike Perlmutter said.
That’s the spin from the money machine, but you have to wonder if Marvel hasn’t diluted it’s brand by selling out to Disney. Comic geeksare a very loyal breed of purists, and while not everything in the Marvel Universe is printed in 4-color, the comic book is it’s mainstay.
Can you imagine the look on the Hulk’s face when Mickey Mouse chastises him for clobbering people? How will Red Sonja ever fit in with the pencil waist Disney princesses who all sing in the same perfect key? Can Goofy survive even ONE butt whooping from Conan the Barbarian? Doubtful.
Sorry, but other than animation, I don’t see a fit here. It’s enough to make Peter Parker want to pickle himself with one of Aunt May’s special recipies.
Until the Thing starts cross-dressing, Make Mine Marvel… the old Marvel!
