Hurricane Earl regained category 4 strength while rolling towards the United States. Winds back to 135 mph and a clear large eye reformed. See the latest images and forecast maps in the slide show below.
The path of Earl will take it very close to or over North Carolina, before curving away from the coast and out towards New England. Hurricane force winds extend 90 miles away from the center. Tropical Storm force winds reach out 200 miles. This places the likely hurricane conditions and a warning for North Carolina. Tropical storm warnings are from Virginia Beach through Ocean City, Maryland and north into Delaware and New Jersey.
The worst conditions are expected after midnight Thursday into Friday morning. These include an average of 2-4 inches of rain, with up to 6 inches in the Outer Banks of NC. Storm surge in the hurricane warning can be 3-5 feet high, while in the tropical storm warning region 1-3 feet.
