United Coalition of Reason

United Coalition of Reason - UnitedCoR.org

Atheists are notorious for our lack of organization. The analogy often used is that organizing atheists is like herding cats. Aside from our lack of belief in deities, we tend to have a hard time agreeing on anything. In fact, we can’t even agree to call ourselves atheists. Some people who lack the belief in deities prefer to call themselves agnostic rather than atheist or freethinkers, or Humanists, or even the silly label of Brights. People of Reason can’t even agree on what to call ourselves, so how can agree on how best to organize?

Philadelphia atheists… I mean people who lack the belief in deities, found the answer. Philadelphia has multiple organizations: The Freethought Society of Greater Philadelphia, Humanist Association of Greater Philadelphia, Philadelphia Atheists Meetup, Ethical Humanist Society of Philadelphia, Temple Atheists and Critical Thinkers, and Secular Penn. While all these organizations are great and all have their own unique niche to fill and their own unique perspective, they all essentially have the same goal. They are all places for those who lack the belief in deities to get together and form a community. The problem was that they were not coordinated with each other and therefore ended up working against each other rather than with each other.

Now, all these groups have gotten together to form the Philly Coalition of Reason or PhillyCoR. Each group still does their own thing, but now they share what they are doing with the other groups. They can also work together at times for common events or to pool their funds for a larger advertising campaign.

PhillyCoR was the first, but it wasn’t the last. Now there are similar Coalitions of Reason in Dallas-Fort Worth, Arizona, and Colorado. These newer Coalitions of Reason have used the PhillyCoR model and have increased their visibility to the general public, gotten many more new members, and have fosters an atmosphere of cooperation within their areas with all their groups.

In January, plans began to create a United Coalition of Reason whose job it is to create Coalitions of Reason around the nation and to help those Coalitions that are already in existence. Leading up this new project is Fred Edwords, the director of communications for the American Humanist Association. Although to me Edwords will always be the guy who kicked Bill O’Reilly’s ass on his own show (see clip below).

The new United Coalition of Reason is a national organization that works to raise the visibility of local groups in the community of reason. The idea is that local groups stay local and organize with other local groups within their local area. Find out more about the United Coalition of Reason and how to form such a coalition in your area at http://UnitedCoR.org.

I am so glad I saw this clip today. I am like so many others who not only question the existence of a god, but need to speak to others who are in the same boat. If you speak too loudly, irate religious folk try to drown you out. They "pray" for you (please don't), and then they get so upset. Why? I went to church as a teen, (my parents were not into any religion)and thru the years I have had so many cruel things done to me & loved ones by "good Christians" that I have left that bit behind.
Thank you for making me aware of these organizations. I need to talk with intelligent people who share my views. Again, thanks.
