You might remember Bill Keller, the pastor who told his "virtual" congregation that a vote for Mitt Romney was a vote for Satan, after which he was apparently investigated by the IRS.
Based in Largo, Florida, Keller, creator of Liveprayer.com, the "world's largest interactive Christian website," took his late-night televangelism shtick to the nation in 2006. The ex-con, who spent years in jail for insider trading, was a perfect fit for the televangelism line-up. His church is all over the Internet and the airwaves.
Now, he's set up a temporary office in the ballroom of the Embassy Suites New York, from where he hopes to take millions of dollars in donations in an effort to build a counter protest to the proposed Islamic Center to be built near Ground Zero.
Clearly, the idea of mosque in New York infuriates Keller. "The gall, the arrogance, the audacity of this false religion of violence, hate, and death," he writes, "to build their temple to satan just blocks from that hallowed ground."
He continues: "Islam is a 1400-year-old lie from hell... "Allah" is an imaginary god that is actually a black rock and is NOT the God of the Bible! I am excited to announce today the birth of the '9-11 Christian Center at Ground Zero.' The mission is simple. Have a place at ground zero where people can come to hear the real compromised Truth right from God's Word, and find the only true hope there is, faith in Jesus Christ!!! We will combat the lies of this world and Islam with the TRUTH. We will combat the hatred of this world and Islam with LOVE. We will combat the violence of this world and Islam with PEACE. Finally, we will combat eternal death this world and Islam brings with LIFE EVERLASTING!!!"
Like his website devoted to the 9/11 Christian center, Keller's Live Prayer page is filled with hate, and yet, we are to believe that his Christian center will combat hatred with love?
Keller claims that President Obama is an "enemy of God" and compares him to Hitler. If you see nothing else at Keller's Live Prayer website, do not miss "Muhammed, the Muslim Pig."
Clearly, Keller is a second-rate Beck with delusions of theological importance. And he wants to build a Christian center in New York City, not to share his Christian faith, and not to be a place for Christians to congregate. He wants to build the center to protest Islam, and to spread his hatred for another religion.
Christians are generally against government limitations on where they can build their churches and how much land they can cover with buildings that sit empty most of the time, until a religion they find distasteful decides to take advantage of our freedom of religion.
Keller, like so many televangelists, is a hypocrite.
