New Penn & Teller, Bullsh*t! The Vatican

Pope: snapshot from the episode

To kick off this episode we’re introduced to a political satirist fighting against the Vatican’s control over the Italian government. From there several issues are discussed including:
Homosexuality: It’s okay to be gay, but you can’t get married, and sex outside of marriage is a sin, so you still get to go to hell.
Sexual Abuse: Documented proof that the Vatican covers up Catholic scandals and Pope Benedict XVI cannot be investigated by the US for his involvement, because in 2005 George W. Bush granted him immunity in such cases.
Condoms: You can’t wear one to protect your wife because it prevents the spread of life, but you’re allowed to spread disease and kill her, which breaks the (Catholic) fifth commandment.

Yeah I almost forgot about those guys since I recently moved and decided not to have cable.

The part about the Pope and Bush made me feel sick.

You know what makes me feel sick?

Anti religious nut jobs like yourself.

Why don't you tell me why people who go to church every week give way more charity?? Why do people who are truly religious have lower crime rates, less depression, less substance abuse, less every negative indicator than their godless or irreligious counterparts???

I'm quite curious since you guys seem to know everything!

We don't claim to know everything, but if you believe everything you just said then you don't seem to know much about what you're talking about. Give me the statistics to back up your claims. Then after that, how about some evidence that the imaginary person in the sky exists. Til then, you might be a bit more thoughtful in regard to who you call a "nut job".

Actually this is all untrue. Lower crime rates? Ridiculous...less than 1% od the prison population are atheist. The most atheistic countries have lower crime rates, lower teenage pregnancy and less substance abuse.

Chris, you don't have to compare the US to other countries to prove Jake's assertion is nonsense. You just have to compare the more highly religious red states in this country with blue ones. If the blue states are sinkholes of moral decay, as right-wing pundits insist, how come red states lead the nation in violent crime, divorce, illegitimacy, and incarceration, among other evils? The statistics demonstrating this aren't hard to find.

"Why don't you tell me why people who go to church every week give way more charity??"

... because churches are religious non-profit organizations so all that collection plate money that puts gold plating on the pope's toothbrush count as charitable giving. Whereas secular humanitarian groups are non-prophet non-profits, so more of the money goes where it should.
