Study Time
Just as we all slip into hypnosis many times during the day...when we day dream while driving, can't find something we just had in our hands, lock the keys in the car or lock ourselves out of the house... students often set themselves up for this same type of experience by studying non-stop for hours.
This sort of forgetfulness happens because we have too much on our minds, and all of these experiences are the result of a hynotic state brought on by mental overload. Hypnosis is the body's natural escape mechanism from mental and physical overload.
How to Study Successfully
1. Make sure you are not in hypnosis
Focus and concentration begin to wane after less than an hour of intense study. When we overload ourselves with information the mind begins to wander. One of the very best ways to study is to take a break every hour, use a timer if you have to, but give your mind a chance to absorb what you've just studied. Take time to stand up and stretch...stretching brings you out of your hypnotic daze and improves retention.
2. It's very important to know and understand your learning style.
- Learn by reading silently (eye-minded)
- Learn by reading verbally aloud (ear-minded)
- Learn by writing things down (Kinesthetic)
- Learn by a combination of 2 of the 3
What's you personal style? Experiment to find out, because if you are attempting to studying in a style that doesn't suit you, you'll experience many frustrations in retaining what you are trying to learn.
3. Diet is also an important but often neglected aspect of study.
Your blood sugar levels can have serious effects on your ability to maintain concentration. If you don't eat enough or consume too much sugar you're actually hindering your ability to study effectively.
If you fell anxious, irritable, nervous and unable to concentrate~don't just assume it's because you're bored or can't comprehend what your trying to learn. Get up, stretch and have a meal or a protein snack...more often than not you'll find your ability to concentrate has significantly improved when you resume to your studies.
4. Repetition, Memory and Recall
The mind learns through repetition and there's a simple way to remember any fact or formula. When you repeat something 21 times it is burned it into your memory. Of course this will take some effort but could guarantee your ability to recall. And, though I can't explain why, there seems to be something magic about the number 21.
Concerning recall: Have you ever noticed that the harder you try to recall something the more difficult and frustrating it becomes? Another simple trick is to tell yourself “I'm going to let it go for now and it will pop into my head.” You will find that It usually does.
