SHANGHAI, CHINA – American doughnut chain Krispy Kreme is set to open its first location in Shanghai on Dec. 11. The store is on WuJiang Road. The company said that the store will offer 16 varieties of Krispy Kreme doughnuts that will be made fresh daily, including the hot Original Glazed doughnut.

Krispy Kreme previously opened locations in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, although several of the Hong Kong stores closed within a few months of opening because the franchisee went into liquidation.

Based on a secret French doughnut recipe, Krispy Kreme was founded in 1937 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The company can be found in approximately 550 locations around the world.

A number of doughnut retailers have jumped into China in recent years. Dunkin’ Donuts has previously announced a major growth strategy throughout China. It remains to be determined how successful these brands can be in a country that traditionally hasn’t had a sweet tooth. Most Chinese complain that American-made goods are “too sweet” and many retailers have to adjust their recipes for the Asia market.

Nonetheless, Dunkin’ Donuts has experienced phenomenal success in South Korea – not only getting people to eat doughnuts but to ditch tea for coffee.
