HOUSTON, TEXAS - Seven-time NBA all-star player Yao Ming Friday said he received a gift recently from America’s 41st President George H.W. Bush.
“George Bush (the father) lives in Houston. He gave me his book ‘China Diary’ from his time there. It's good. My first English book to read,” the Houston Rockets center posted on his Twitter page.
George H.W. Bush has a long history with China. He served as Washington’s top diplomat in the country during the mid-1970s. He returned to Beijing last August to help dedicate the new U.S. Embassy in Beijing with his son and then President George W. Bush. He also served as the honorary captain of the U.S. team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The book, The China Diary of George H.W. Bush, was published by Princeton University Press last year. The memoir is a chronicle of his personal thoughts while head of the U.S. Liaison Office in Beijing. The diary begins on October 21, 1974 and ends on August 22, 1975. The diary contains Bush's reactions to all aspects of life in Beijing, including his opinions of public officials and diplomats, politics, family matters, international affairs, and life in China.
Meanwhile, America’s current President Barack Obama will arrive in Yao Ming’s hometown of Shanghai on the evening of Nov. 14 and has meetings scheduled in the city the following day.
