Stories LA, on Sunset Blvd in Silverlake, hosted a reading by author John Radanovich of his book Benny More – Wildman of Rhythm last Saturday evening.
About 50 people showed up for the event during which Radanovich read from his book and shared some of the humorous anecdotes that he learned about the Cuban singer during his research. The bookstore sold out every copy of the book they had ordered, which the author signed in the course of the evening. The LA band Los Puros played some of More’s music in the bookstore’s patio.
Benny More became a Cuban music icon even though he lived a short life only 44 years long. Although he did not read music, he wrote over a dozen songs that eventually became Cuban standards. His voice and his performance style became a force that supported the development of Afro-Cuban music as we know it today.
Because there was little material about More archived in Cuban libraries, John Radanovich spent years researching, interviewing the singer’s family members and acquaintances, and digging up old recordings and photographs. Some of those pictures are included in the book.
