The Autry National Center of the American West sits next to Interstate 5 at Griffith Park with a main purpose: to celebrate the diversity and the history of the American West and to offer an insight about our present by considering our past. During the summer months, however, The Autry fills up with the sizzling sounds of Salsa, Latin Jazz, Afro-Cuban beats, and other rhythms that attract hundreds every week on Thursday from 6 pm to 9 pm.
Coming up July 15, the charanga group Orquesta Charangoa, led by flutist Fay Roberts will perform. Dimelo! Records recording artist Lucky 7 Mambo will follow on July 22, to bring the high energy sounds of the classic mambo with an instrument you hardly see these days anymore – the vibraphone. The list of scheduled performances continues weekly until the end of August.
This event is outdoors and informal - shorts and tennis shoes will be as good as little black dresses and high heels. It is free to Autry members and $7 to everyone else. A taco and drink bar opens at 6 pm and if, after the first margarita, you decide today’s the day you will learn to dance, Trish Connery of Dance Chatter will teach a free class between band sets created just for you.
The Autry is located at 4700 Western Heritage Way, Los Angeles, CA 90027-1462. More information on its Sizzling Summer Nights at http://theautry.org/series/sizzling-summer-nights
