‘Choco’ Orta, the Salsa singer originally from Santurce, Puerto Rico, and a current resident of New York City, performed at the Conga Room at L.A. Live last Saturday.
In what was arguably the best Salsa concert so far this year at this venue, the contra-alto vocalist performed songs out of her Ahora Mismo CD, including ‘Por Accidente’ (see video below) and the well-known song ‘Ay Jose’.
Born Virgen Milagros Orta Rodriguez, ‘Choco’ said she was thrilled to perform at the Conga Room. “I have waited 15 years for this,” she said in Spanish. She was backed on stage by a group of fine Los Angeles musicians, led by bassist and composer Yalil Guerra, and supported by fans and family members in the audience.
A graduate in Theater Education from the University of Puerto Rico, the 51-year-old put on a show that went beyond her magnificent voice. She is a performer, a dancer, and a conga player, and this evening, as is often the case in her concerts, included a conga solo for which she received much applause from the crowd.
