Turns out that Aventura, the bachata group that filled up the Honda Center almost to capacity last Wednesday, is a lot more than just a tall, dark, and handsome “Romeo” who gyrates his thighs on stage and sings catchy romantic songs.
Instead, Aventura is, at its core, four talented Santos who each brings a different gift into this group that exploded in 2002 with the song “Obsesion.” Anthony “Romeo” Santos is the lead singer and the songwriter. He is 29-years-old, the product of a Puerto Rican mother and a Dominican father. His cousin, 31-year-old Henry Santos, does the back-up vocals and likewise composes. He was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to New York at age 14. The third Santos, Lenny, is the 31-year-old guitarist, producer, and arranger of the group. He was born in the Bronx to Dominican parents. His brother, Max “Mikie” Santos, is the 28-year-old bass player and the rapper of the group. It is him you hear on those rap rifts in the Aventura songs.
The four Santos, and the rest of their entourage, are extremely popular. The Honda Center buzzed with people who could sing along to almost every Aventura song, and who, as if it wasn’t enough, got to see Lakers’ Ron Artest rap his single “Champions” live halfway through the show.
Not a bad deal at all for a Wednesday evening in Anaheim!
